Bristlecone Pine Cones

A piece of decaying wood from an ancient bristlecone pine that first germinated perhaps thousands of years ago is surrounded by russet-colored pinecones that carry the seeds of future generations.

"Bristlecone pines are some of the oldest living things on Earth. Usually we see photos of them as knurled, twisted and sinewy trees shown against blue skies as if in defiance of the normal rules of mortality that we're all subject to. I like this photograph because, in addition to rich tones and textures, it tells a different side of the bristlecones' story."
